Carlton cigarettes were developed and produced by the old American Tobacco Company, the makers of Camel and Lucky Strike cigarettes. It was one of the earliest brands to use a unique combination of low tar/nicotine tobacco and perforated filter tipping to produce a low tar delivery. These cigarettes smoke stream was also mellowed by the addition of charcoal to the filter material. Carlton cigarettes are now manufactured by Reynolds American, the successor company to American Tobacco.
